Our plan is to save as much money as possible, purchase a boat (done) in the Caribbean Florida in October or November August, 2014, fix it up until November of 2014, sail it to Australia and sell it in November of 2015.
Ok, we bought the boat… Sailed into the Bahamas, left too late to do what we wanted above, found we were missing our family and could probably use more crew to do what we’d planned…
Sailed back to Ft. Lauderdale, put the boat up for sale and went back to work at our old jobs. Now we have a beautiful house, a beautiful boat (that we can’t use because it’s in Florida, for sale…) and since the boat isn’t selling we’re trying to figure out how to get the boat to the San Francisco Bay area so we can enjoy it with friends and family. (If it doesn’t sell, which after two years, isn’t that likely)
So, the new, shiny, updated plan is to move the boat in May 2017 from Ft. Lauderdale to Galveston/Houston Texas, put it in a marina there until we can make arrangements to have it shipped to the San Francisco Bay area, where we’ll be able to maintain and sail her, perhaps sell? Get a partner or two? Time will tell!
We’ll be arriving in Ft. Lauderdale on May 14th to prep for the trip across the gulf.
Update: Boat move from Ft Lauderdale to Texas, then the shipment of the boat to San Francisco bay was a great success. We left Ft. Lauderdale and started the journey to Texas. We day-sailed down the east coast of Florida until we got to Marathon for our final prep before the gulf crossing. On 5/19/2017 we left Marathon and headed for Texas. We arrived on the afternoon of 5/27/17, flew back home on 5/30/2017.
Dean flew back to Texas to get the boat loaded up and shipped via truck to the San Francisco Bay area. Truck pulled out on 6/19/2017. Truck arrived in Alameda, Duet got a shiny new bottom job and and was back in the water ready to move to her new home in Brisbane Marina on 7/15/2017. We’ve been enjoying sailing on the bay every since.
Update 5/22/2017
We’re thinking about moving the boat to Southern California so we can take some trips around Catalina, and do some sailing where the weather is warmer. We’ve enjoyed the time Duet’s been in San Francisco, but covid affected it very badly. So many of the things we used to enjoy doing in the city are gone now, and so much trash on the streets, homeless encampments, druggies… We’ve been skipping going there most times when we’ve been at the boat. We’ve sailed to many of the great places around the bay, but we’re thinking it might be nice to explore new horizons. We’ll update the website when more information is available.
